Nordic Rose Weekend

A post tour to West and North Iceland 11. – 13. August

Day 1, 11. August

We leave Reykjavík and head north to Borgarfjörður, where we will visit two private Rosegardens. The summer residence of Hlíf Steingrímsdóttir and Halldór Zöega near Kleppjárnsreykir and the farm of Háafell where Jóhanna Bergmann Þorvaldsdóttir grows roses and breeds the viking Goats. On the way we pass Deildartunguhver and pass by Reykholt where famous writer of Sagas Snorri Sturluson lived in the 13th century. After an hour’s drive we will arrive at Haukabrekka on the southern shore of Breiðafjörður, the weekend residence of Bjarni Júlíusson where he grows roses and many other interesting things. After the visit we proceed through Dalir and visit a private rose garden in Búðardalur, a small village and service hub. Then we head east across Laxárdalsheiði to arrive at our lodging at the Gauksmýri farm. P.s. Don’t worry – there will be food etc. along the way.

Day 2, 12. August

After breakfast we will visit Eggert Aðalsteinsson, the president of the Icelandic Rose-club, at his summer residence and visit his trial grounds for roses in some of the worst conditions. We continue to Skagafjörður where we will visit some private gardens and a farm that provides a large part of the North with cut roses before arriving in Akureyri, the beautiful capital of North Iceland. In Akureyri there are many beautiful private gardens with roses, but the highlight of the day is the 2nd northernmost Botanical garden in the world, Lystigarðurinn and the one with by far the coldest climate. The park has been nominated for a World federation of Roses award and if it receives the honor it will be our task to formally announce it,

Day 3, 13. August

We leave Akureyri to drive across the Icelandic highlands – with a lunch stop at Hveravellir, a hotspring area in the centre of the country, where it is also possible to take a small dip in one of the natural pools. We then pass by Gullfoss, the golden waterfall, Geysir, Laugarvatn and Þingvellir before arriving back to Reykjavík in the late afternoon. P.S it is also possible to take a domestic flight to Reykjavík from Akureyri to catch a flight back to the European mainland in the late evening of the 12th or in the early morning of the 13th of August.
