Sunday, August 10th
Buses will depart at 9:00 AM from Grand Hotel.
We will divide the group in two. One half will start by visiting gardens in Mosfellsbær, while the other half explores gardens in Garðabær and Kópavogur.
For lunch both groups will meet at the Scout Lodge by Hvaleyrarvatn in Hafnarfjörður a small nature reserve.
Following lunch, the entire group will visit the Rose Garden in Höfðaskógur (Höfðaskógur – Hafnarfjörður Forestry Association), located on the hill above Hvaleyrarvatn. The rose collection in Höfðaskógur is a collaborative project between the Rose Club of the Icelandic Horticultural Society and the Hafnarfjörður Forestry Association. The collection includes well over a hundred varieties and cultivars of roses. The roses are minimally maintained and must compete with other vegetation growing in the area. The purpose of this rose cultivation is to assess the survival and growth of different rose species and cultivars under rather challenging conditions.
In the afternoon, the group will split again, with one half visiting gardens in Garðabær/Kópavogur and the other in Mosfellsbær. The group will reconvene at the Arboretum in Meltunga, Kópavogur (https://www.skog.is/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/FB-Meltunga-grein.pdf).
At Meltunga, the Nordic Rose Garden will be visited. This garden was created as part of a Nordic collaboration project among rose societies in the Nordic countries. Roses from all Nordic countries have been planted there to observe how they thrive in Iceland. In Meltunga, a garden featuring Canadian roses has also been established.
After the garden visits, the Nordic Rose Weekend will conclude with a light evening meal (BBQ) at Meltunga.
